What do you do if you want dental implants, but can’t afford them?

I have lost a tooth and feel humiliated every time I smile.  What do i do if I can’t afford a dental implant, but am desperate to get one?

Alexa- L.A.

Alexa,

It’s good that you’re looking at getting a dental implant.  It’s the tooth replacement procedures that will actually help you retain your jawbone.  With other procedures, such as dentures, your jaw bone begins to degrade.

I know they can be expensive, but an affordable dentist, like Dr. Peck, there are ways to get affordable dental care, even for dental implant procedures.

There are payment plans available from most dentists, through care credit. They have low and even no-interest payment plans.  Another option is to get mini implants.  These are more affordable and can help you jaw bone stay in place while you save up for there stronger counterparts.

Losing money with dental insurance

I got dental insurance, but feel like I’m losing money with it. I can’t figure out how to navigate all the loopholes and filing deadlines.  Is there a better way to save money with dental work?

Terri B. – Kansas

Terri,

I’m sorry for your frustration. There’s nothing worse than paying for insurance in order to make your dentistry more affordable, but not knowing how to get full value for it.

However, I must say that I don’t think your dentist is doing his job.  It is your dental office’s job to understand dental insurance in order to get you all the value you can.  They should be filing your insurance for you.

If your dentist won’t help you with it, you’d be better served switching practices.

Can’t afford the treatment I want

I lost a tooth due to an accident. I really want a dental implant to replace it, but became very depressed when I realized I couldn’t afford it.  I don’t want to be stuck with a removable denture for the rest of my life. I want something that stays in my mouth. I know this sounds like not a big deal, but to me it is everything. I’ve been crying for days.

Annalisa M. – Portland, OR

Annalisa,

There are times in our life when our heart’s desires and our pocket books do not match.  I know it is disappointing. Fortunately, there is an affordable dental solution that I think you’ll like better than a removable partial denture.

Under ethical standards, your dentist is supposed to give you all of your options. We aren’t always able to afford the ideal treatment. That doesn’t mean that we can’t have a suitable treatment anyway.

Has your dentist mentioned getting a dental bridge. It will use a false tooth suspended between two crowns. It’s not as ideal as a dental implant, but it is not a removable applicance like a partial denture.

You could use either of those two procedures as a permanent or temporary solution. Your heart is set on implants. You can have them, it just might take a little longer than you’d hoped. Get the solution you can afford now and save for the one you really want.

Must I look like a hillbilly because I’m poor?

I fell down a flight of stairs and knocked out one of my front teeth. My dentist said I needed a dental implant to replace it. When he told me the price my eyeballs popped out. Do I really have to choose between no food or shelter and having a front tooth?

Marcus G. – Little Rock,

Marcus,

No. You will not have to choose between that at all. I have to say that I am a little annoyed at your dentist for not giving you all of  your options. In fact, it is unethical.

There are plenty of other options available to you that are more affordable.  Did your dentist ever mention to you a dental bridge or a removable partial denture?

Both of those options are more affordable than a dental implant. If your dentist will only give the most expensive option, you should find a different dentist.

I want a free dentist

Is there free dentists for poor people? I can’t afford to go and I have a tooth ache.

Devon O. – Baltimore

Devon,

Each city generally has free dental service clinics, but they’re not permanent, instead they are once a year or so.  However, if you are having tooth pain now, it needs to be dealt with. That pain probably indicates a tooth infection. When left untreated, they can become quite serious.

Plus, it is more affordable to deal with things early. If not, you could end up having to replace a tooth, which can cost a great deal.  I understand you’re in a difficult financial situation. In that case, I would do an internet search for an affordable dentist in your area.

When you talk to them, be up front about your financial circumstances. They’ll likely work with you.

I can’t afford a dental implant

I have a problem and I don’t know what to do. I am having a tooth extracted. My dentist says I have to get a dental implant. However, between the surgery and the restoration, I just can’t afford it. What do I do? I don’t want to leave an empty space in my mouth.

Yvette L. – Maryland

Yvette,

What your dentist is doing is unethical.  He is supposed to give you all your options, not just insist on the ideal treatment. Everybody is on a different budget.

There are other more affordable dental options for your situation. If you can’t afford a dental implant, maybe you can afford a dental bridge or a removable partial denture. If even those are out of your reach, you could get a dental flipper. They are meant to be temporary, but it can fill in if you’re in a pinch and need to save up for a more permanent solution.

I hope this helps.

Finding Affordable Dentistry

When you’re looking for an affordable dentist, you don’t want to sacrifice quality.  I don’t necessarily recommend going to the least expensive dentist. That could mean a compromise in the quality of materials.  For instance, if a dentist has significantly cheaper costs for dental implants, he can afford to have significantly lower prices. But, what if those costs savings came at the expense of quality implants? Then, you’re no longer saving money, but risking your health.

But, an affordable dentist isn’t an anomaly. There are other ways to keep costs down.  One is to place your practice in a more affordable area. Lower overhead means savings for patients without sacrificing quality.

For instance, Peck Family Dentistry is just about 4 miles outside of Scottsdale. this allows us to serve both the people of Scottsdale and Phoenix.  Our overhead is lower than if we were just four miles east and we pass those savings on to our patients.

Disparity in dental costs

Can you tell me why there is such a disparity in different dental costs? One dentist in my area charges $900 for a dental crown while another charges $2,100. How can there be such a difference in their pricing? I’m trying to save money, but this is such a huge difference, I’m wondering if something is wrong with the first pricing.

Gennifer F., – Hot Springs, AR

Gennifer,

You are wise to realize that the cheapest deal is not always the best deal.  You want an affordable dentist, but not one that cuts corners in important areas.

The difference in pricing is caused from a lot of factors. Sometimes it is a matter of the type and quality of the materials used. There are some materials, like the type of porcelain used  or whether it is all porcelain verses porcelain fused to metal.

Some times dentists cost less because they work hard to keep their fees down, without sacrificing quality.

No insurance-need affordable dental care

If you don’t have insurance, how do you know if a dentist is affordable?

Melinda G.- Baton  Rouge, LA

Melinda,

You could do a search for dentists in your area and then call around to get their prices.  Many dentists also have a payment plan option.  Most have low and even no-interest payment plans. Dentists who don’t mind working with patients often advertise as an affordable dentist on their website.

Beware of just going with the cheapest price.  Often that means the quality isn’t as good. That could mean a failed procedure that ends up costing you way more than if you’d just gone to a better dentist to begin with.
