I\u2019ve never been happy with the way my smile looks. I\u2019ve heard great things about Lumineers and would love to try them, but I also grind my teeth. Does that mean I\u2019m not a candidate? Also, if that means I can\u2019t get them and I don\u2019t tell my dentist about the grinding, how long will the Lumineers last? I\u2019m not against having them replaced at some point, but not in the very near future. I just don\u2019t want to be told I can\u2019t have them. I\u2019m finally ready to do it and I\u2019m afraid my dentist will say no.<\/p>\n

Honesty is the best policy any time you seek medical advice. Grinding your teeth may or may not exclude you from having Lumineers done, but that\u2019s something your dentist will need to diagnose.<\/p>\n

Grinding and clenching will certainly reduce the longevity of your Lumineers<\/a>, but it\u2019s not possible to predict if or when they\u2019ll fail. Impact from grinding your teeth while you sleep can be minimized or stopped with a night guard. \u00a0There are other appliances that may help during the day as well and a number of relaxation techniques that will help you overcome the daytime urge to grind or clench.<\/p>\n

Your dentist may also recommend an alternate to Lumineers that will give you the beautiful esthetic results you want, but will stand up better to the stress you intend to put on them. Don\u2019t think you have to go with a specific brand or style, just because it\u2019s what you know.<\/p>\n

One more thing to consider is that no restoration will last forever.\u00a0 At some point, regardless of what you choose, it will need to be replaced. If you don\u2019t take proper care with your restorations, they can fail in a very short period of time, but well-cared for, well-placed restorations can last decades or more. Have an honest discussion with your dentist about your circumstances and what you\u2019d like to achieve and see what he suggests. You will be glad you did in the long run.<\/p>\n
